Education is the backbone of our society; it manifests itself in a variety of ways, ranging from an individual training session, to a high school diploma, to a doctorate degree. Teachers inspire us, in some way, to achieve high standards for ourselves. Their passionate deliverance of the material is what we remember most and use later on in our lives. To be an educator is a privilege, it is an opportunity to share one’s knowledge with the next generation. It is a chance to help another individual grow personally and professionally.
As a music educator, it is my goal to inspire my students. I want to make them fall in love with music, whether they are pursuing a career in music or a becoming a doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer. Having a positive experience in the arts can impact a child as they move on through their school career. I believe that having the foundation of Western classical music is important for establishing individual technique and ensemble roles. So my curriculum incorporate all aspects of classical music and technique.
In addition to classical music, students will get to experience world music. While classical music can open many doors for young musicians: versatility can keep them stimulated and open their ears to the world as well as foster creativity and expression. I want to focus on integrating multiple styles in a format that is exciting for the students. I will introduce several theory concepts, including aural skills and rhythmic patterns through world music. Such concepts will help them understand the music that they are hearing and playing. This will aid them outside of the music classroom as well, as these ideas can be linked to mathematics, the sciences, and history. Identifying these elements within music can open a new door for students and their understanding of their general studies as a whole. These components will keep the students enthusiastic and curious about music, which is something that we tend to lose as we grow older.
